Case study

Group Gwalia Cyf

Group Gwalia Cyf is a leading social housing provider in south and mid Wales managing over 5,500 high quality, affordable homes and meeting the needs of a diverse range of residents. British Gas, on behalf of Group Gwalia, has recently managed a fuel switching project which has seen almost 200 homes in Swansea connected to the gas main and provided them with a new gas central heating system.

102 houses and apartments in Llangwm, Penplas and 96 apartments at William and Clarence Court in Swansea city centre have benefited from the partnership. Previously these homes relied on electric storage heaters however thanks to the connection they are today enjoying lower fuel bills as well as energy efficient heating. The scheme has also had a positive impact on the environment, saving in excess of 17,700 tonnes of CO2.

“The gas central heating is much better because we have instant hot water and we have more control over the heating. Everyone involved was really helpful and it was good to have someone onsite after the installation to deal with any problems we had operating the new system.”
Bernard Miles, Gwalia Resident

In total the project saw an investment of almost £750,000. British Gas coordinated funding from a number of sources, including the Welsh Government’s Arbed funding scheme and British Gas’ CESP funding. Gwalia in itself, made a contribution of £150,000. The gas supply was installed by Wales & West Utilities.
